Looking After Locks and Hinges

Don’t ignore locks and hinges this winter. We’ve turned back the clocks, now it’s time to check all the locks. To keep windows and doors in tip top condition, and to avoid getting stuck out in the cold with a key that won’t turn, oil all moving parts every six months.

Here’s some guidance for keeping all moving parts of doors and windows working properly.

What should I use to lubricate locks and hinges?

Many households will have a can of WD-40 in the shed or the garage. Don’t be tempted to use it for this job however. It can jam the locks by causing a collection of dust, and it would do the same to hinges and door handles.

Look for an oil such as ‘3 in One’. It also comes in an oil spray, which can be more user friendly.

Which parts do I need to oil?

Locks – With the door open, lock the door so that all bolts and latches are exposed. Lubricate all of those with the ‘3 in One’ oil, and wipe the surface with a damp cloth to remove excess.

You can also use the spray oil on the lock cylinder to keep the key and lock working together as they should. This process can be repeated on windows with a similar locking system.

Hinges – Wipe hinges down so they’re free of dust and dirt. Then apply the oil or oil spray, wiping again with a damp cloth. With uPVC and composite doors, the hinges will be greased before they’re fitted and this will also help to maximise their lifespan.

Door Handles – It’s usually easy to know when a door handle isn’t working as it should. You use it to get in and out of your home. But it’s worth checking to make sure that all door handles return to a horizontal position when pushed. Especially with doors that aren’t so often used.

Apply the oil around the edge of the moving part of the handle and then wipe with a damp cloth. You should also check to make sure that handles haven’t become lose over time. If so, you may need to adjust the fixings.

Windows – Open your window and wipe away the dirt and dust from the inside tracks. Then oil all moving pivot parts and locks, wiping away the excess oil with a damp cloth. Repeat for all of the windows. French doors can be treated in the same way.
